Why Is My PDF Blurry After Converting from JPG?
Your photo was sharp, and the PDF the converter handed back is not. The format didn't do that; the converter did, and it takes about two minutes to prove it and get a sharp PDF instead.
What actually makes a PDF blurry after conversion
The PDF format is not the culprit. A PDF is a container: it holds your image plus instructions for how big to draw it on the page. A JPG can sit inside a PDF byte for byte identical to the file on your phone, at full resolution, with zero quality change. Print shops rely on exactly this.
So when your PDF comes out soft, the converter changed your image before embedding it. Free upload-based converters usually do one or both of these:
- Downsampling. The converter shrinks your photo to smaller pixel dimensions, often somewhere between 1000 and 1500 pixels on the long edge. A 4032 x 3024 iPhone photo loses roughly 90 percent of its pixels in that resize. At fit-to-screen zoom you might not notice. At 200 percent zoom, or on paper, you will.
- Recompression. The converter decodes your JPG and re-encodes it at a lower quality setting. JPEG is a lossy format, so each re-encode discards detail and adds artifacts: the smudged halos around text, the blocky patches in what used to be smooth sky.
Upload converters have a reason to do this. Every megabyte you send them costs server bandwidth and storage, so shrinking your file protects their bill, not your document. Others default to small "email-ready" output without asking. Either way, the quality loss happens without a warning, and the download page still tells you the conversion succeeded.
One more cause has nothing to do with the converter: the source image was low resolution to begin with. An 800 pixel screenshot stretched across a full Letter page looks soft in any tool, because the page demands more pixels than the file contains. Converting screenshots is its own topic; the short version is to keep the page size matched to the image instead of inflating it.
How to diagnose it in two minutes
Run these checks in order. The first two catch converter damage; the last two rule out false alarms.
- Compare file sizes. Check the size of the original JPG and the PDF it produced. A 3.8 MB photo that became a 320 KB PDF lost over 90 percent of its data; there is nowhere else for those bytes to have gone. A faithful conversion produces a PDF slightly larger than the JPG, because the image is intact plus a small amount of page structure around it.
- Zoom both to 200 percent. Open the original photo and the PDF side by side. Zoom each to 200 percent and look at an area with fine detail, like text or hair. If the PDF is softer or blockier than the JPG at the same zoom, the converter recompressed or downsampled the image.
- Rule out the preview. Thumbnails, chat-app previews, and some quick-look views render PDFs at low resolution to save memory. Open the file in a real PDF viewer and zoom in before you blame the file itself.
- Check the source at 100 percent. If the original JPG already looks soft at full size, the converter is innocent. No tool can add detail that was never captured; you need a better photo or a higher-resolution scan.
Quick sanity check: a PDF that embeds your images untouched is roughly the size of the images themselves. If a converter's output is ten times smaller than your photos, it recompressed them, whatever its settings page claimed.
